Minnesota Oncology Physicians Bring Community Cancer Care Priorities to the Minnesota State Capitol

On March 27, 2026, Minnesota Oncology participated in an energizing and highly productive day of advocacy at the Minnesota State Capitol.

A dedicated group of Minnesota Oncology physicians — Dr. Toonen, Dr. Katipamula-Malisetti, Dr. Thurmes, Dr. Damle, Dr. Lander, and Dr. Spencer — stepped forward to share firsthand patient stories and practice experience. Their passion and credibility elevated every conversation and reinforced the critical role of community oncology across the state.

Throughout the day, physicians and legislators alike demonstrated a strong appetite for meaningful dialogue. The high level of engagement made clear that these conversations are resonating and helping build momentum behind policies that protect patient access to timely, high‑quality, community‑based cancer care.

Key Legislative Meetings

Minnesota Oncology physicians met with influential legislators and healthcare leaders, including:

  • Rep. Liz Reyer (DFL–52A), Co‑Vice Chair, House Health Finance & Policy
  • Rep. Robert Bierman (DFL–56A), Co‑Chair, House Health Finance & Policy
  • Rep. Bernie Perryman (R–14A), Co‑Vice Chair, Commerce Finance & Policy
  • Sen. Eric R. Pratt (R–54), Member, Jobs & Economic Development and Finance Committees
  • Sen. Liz Bolden, Member, Senate Healthcare Committee
  • Michelle Benson, Senior Policy Director, Minnesota Hospital Association
  • Chad Fahning, Sr. Manager of Lobbying & Legislative Affairs, Minnesota Medical Association

A highlight of the day was a surprise opportunity to join Sen. Eric Pratt on the Senate Chamber Floor, offering physicians a firsthand view of the legislative process in action.
