Dr. Moshe Chasky Authors Letter to the Editor on Hospital Consolidation, Patent System Flaws and Asynchronous Care

Dr. Moshe Chasky, a hematologist-oncologist at Alliance Cancer Specialists, authored a letter to the editor (LTE) published in STAT on October 26, 2024. In his letter, he endorses the views expressed by Laura and John Arnold in their article “Beware hospital consolidation.” Dr. Chasky argues that the consolidation of independent community practices into hospital systems is detrimental for both physicians and patients. He describes how the uneven playing field forces many physicians out of private practice and into hospital employment, where financial considerations may be prioritized over patient care. Dr. Chasky shares a personal experience of losing his inpatient oncology privileges after refusing a merger with a local hospital, illustrating how consolidation negatively impacts patient care continuity. He advocates for site-neutral payment reform, as proposed in the Lower Costs, More Transparency Act, to level the financial playing field between physicians and hospitals. This reform would help keep independent practices viable and give patients more options for receiving care outside of hospital systems.
